AIBAs 2018 and Award-Winning Queensland Beers
If you haven’t been keeping up with what’s happening in the beer world, that’s ok. We’re here to help you out.
The need to know is this: most beer-lovers in the Sunshine State are extolling the virtuous wonder of award winning Queensland beer. Last Thursday, 17 May 2018, was the “night of nights” for brewers: the AIBAs (Australian International Beer Awards), which is described as “… the country’s largest and most prestigious beer awards and attract more than 2000 entries from around the world.” (Kirkegaard, Broadsheet Brisbane)
Proudly displaying their trophy for Champion Small Australian Brewery, Black Hops also took out the gong for their Beach House Saison (Best Belgian-French Ale) whilst Green Beacon stepped from small to medium to receive this year’s Champion Medium Australian Brewery.
But it’s not just about the big trophies or the gold medals (although Queensland took home 16 of those babies) – to our count, the breweries we visit* brought home 42 silver medals and 32 bronze medals for their variety of beers. Six silvers and four bronzes were also claimed in the design category.
Champion Beers and How To Drink Them
What does this mean for you, dear punter? It means you can drink award winning Queensland beer while we do the driving! Visit Newstead, Green Beacon, Archer and All Inn during our Best of Brisbane tour; sip at Brisbane Brewing Co, Catchment, Ballistic and Slipstream on a Southern Sessions brewery tour; Aether, 4 Hearts, and White Lies feature on our Western Explorer expedition; head up to Mt Tamborine and enjoy beers by Fortitude Brewing with a Taste of Tamborine; or head south to the Gold Coast for a Coldie on the Goldie to check out Black Hops, Balter and Burleigh Brewing Co.
In fact, the only Queensland breweries that we feature on our tours that didn’t bring home any medals simply didn’t enter any beers for judging! All of those breweries are quite new, including Semi-Pro, Revel, Helios and Lost Palms, who will surely make their marks during next year’s ceremony.
So what’s stopping you from booking a tour now? Drink the best of the best in Queensland while we get you behind the scenes of these award-winning breweries to see where (and how!) the magic happens.

In the meantime – cheers and beers!
*Other Queensland breweries – including White Brick, Brouhaha and Your Mates – medalled for their beers, but we don’t visit them on tour and therefore didn’t include them in our personal tally.
